Keeping tenants safe and protecting your property from now until April

Queensland’s storm season runs from now until April, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and sudden downpours. Whether you live in a Queenslander, a low-set home, or an apartment, a little preparation now can prevent costly damage later.

Secure Outdoor Areas

Strong winds can turn loose items into hazards.

  • Tenants: Bring in furniture, umbrellas, and pot plants before storms. Keep balcony drains clear.
  • Landlords: Check fences, sheds, and carports are secure, and trim trees or branches near the roof or powerlines.

Roofs, Gutters & Drainage

Blocked gutters and damaged roofs are the most common causes of storm damage.

  • Tenants: Report leaks or damp patches immediately. Don’t climb on roofs — leave that to your landlord’s trades.
  • Landlords: Schedule a roof and gutter clean before summer and check that downpipes drain away from the house.

Flooding & Power Outages

Heavy rain can cause flash flooding and power loss.

  • Tenants: Move valuables off floors, know where the power switch is, and stay indoors during storms.
  • Landlords: Review drainage around the home and ensure safety switches are working.

Insurance & Communication

  • Tenants: Get contents insurance, your belongings aren’t covered by your landlord’s policy.
  • Landlords: Review insurance for storm, flood, and cyclone cover, and keep maintenance records up to date.
  • Both: Report issues quickly to avoid small problems turning into major repairs.
